ZF to Expand Steering System Portfolio in Chinese Market

According to news released by ZF at the Shanghai Auto Show held in April, the company will now significantly increase the electric power steering system business in China and worldwide, and plans to launch a dual pinion system in the Chinese market in 2018.

Mr. Peter Lake, member of ZF Board of Directors, group market leader and executive vice president of group sales and business development, said: "As the second largest class of electric power steering system in China, double pinion gear is an important supplement to ZF's product portfolio. It is very suitable for medium-sized cars and compact SUVs in China and even in the world."

Compared with the belt-driven EPS, the double pinion is constructed using a steering pinion and a driving pinion portion where the racks operate independently of each other. The steering pinion portion determines the response of the steering system, while the drive pinion portion is designed specifically for a high torque deceleration mechanism, and thus can provide effective power assistance through electric driving. The dual gear EPS is best suited for on-board applications with a maximum rack force of between 9 and 12 kN.

Thilo Bitzer, Vice President of ZF Steering Application Engineering, stated: "Because of the clear cost advantages and environmental benefits, ZF is further enhancing its leading position in the Chinese EPS market with the launch of the new dual-pinion-driven EPS. - An important and growing technology area.

Compared with traditional hydraulic power steering systems, this technology can save up to 4% of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions accordingly. In addition, electric power steering can be integrated with other systems to produce functions such as parking aids and lane keeping aids/lane center hold (combined with ZF camera technology).

Bitzer added: "EPS plays a key role in the development of the market for semi-autonomous and autonomous driving control functions in China. ZF has introduced systems with redundant circuits and functions to help ensure fault-tolerant operation of the system."

ZF first began production of EPS technology in 2001 and has produced more than 30 million units for customers worldwide.
