Hyundai Motor recently applied to the US Patent and Trademark Office for a new patent for the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics for the front structure of vehicles. This will reduce the weight of the vehicle and is the best choice for high-performance N-sector products to enhance competitiveness.
According to the modern patent description, the component is made of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced composite material) and belongs to the main pillar of the body, which distinguishes the compartment from the engine compartment. Usually car manufacturers use steel or aluminum to ensure the strength of these components, and today modern two CFRP components are integrated to achieve the desired structural stiffness. In order to make the CFRP assembly more robust, other parts have been added to have a polygonal cross section instead of a simple rectangular shape.
In addition to the design of this structure as a CFRP piece, the modern patent also lists other lightweight parts of the part, each of which is ultimately combined to increase rigidity. Today, many car manufacturers use CFRP to achieve the effect of reducing pounds. For example, between the rear seats and the trunk of the new Audi A8, this structural material is used, and it is also applied to the sports car TT RS and R8.
