What is the difference between a uniform magnetic field and an inhomogeneous magnetic field? Which magnetic field does the magnetic separator use?

The magnetic field is divided into a uniform magnetic field and an inhomogeneous magnetic field. In a uniform magnetic field, the strength and direction of the magnetic field at any point are the same, as shown in Figure 13-a. In a uniform magnetic field, the magnetic force acting on the magnetic ore particles is uniform, and the ore particles are in an equilibrium state, so that the purpose of selecting the points cannot be achieved.

In an inhomogeneous magnetic field, the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field strength are different, as shown in Figure 13-b. At this time, the magnetic force acting on the magnetic ore particles is not uniform, so the magnetic ore particles move under the action of the magnetic force to achieve the purpose of selecting the points.

The magnetic separator uses only a non-uniform magnetic field. In an inhomogeneous magnetic field, the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the magnetic ore particles is proportional to the degree of unevenness. The more uneven the magnetic field, the greater the magnetic force acting on the magnetic ore particles. The inhomogeneity of the magnetic field strength is usually expressed by a magnetic field gradient in units of Oersted/cm.
