This technology is not yet widely developed due to its high cost. Algae has high oil content and can effectively extract high-quality gasoline and biodiesel, and has high economic value.†For years, scientists have been looking for a biofuel that can be used as a basic fuel for plant crops instead of traditional energy sources.
At present, the cultivation of algae does not require much land, and it is easy to live in seawater and drinking water, so it is considered as an attractive alternative. For now, Xu Guorong pointed out that this technology is mature, but the cost is still huge, although algal biofuels are now 30%-40% cheaper than traditional fuels such as oil or natural gas. They still have to think about how to reduce costs. Of course, if they can contribute to fuel and wastewater treatment, then this project will become even more attractive. In March of this year, the scientific research team planned to apply for a government subsidy of US$130,000 to carry out a pilot project for a sewage treatment plant.
DPI Executive Director Steve also expressed his opinion: Algae biofuels is a promising project, but its need to change algae genes and high upfront costs have made this research road a long way to go. Hong Kong is an open and transparent financial city. It is easy to raise funds. We need the support of the Hong Kong government, not only for research, but also for the process of seaweed biofuels from testing to investment.
