BMW plans to test autonomous vehicles in China

China's traffic conditions have their own unique characteristics. With the rapid expansion of road traffic in China's urban areas, there have emerged a number of different levels of high-speed roads, which also put new demands on the design engineers of autonomous vehicles.

With the success of Audi and Mercedes-Benz's successful acquisition of test-autonomous cars in California, the company has made headlines. BMW also recently announced plans to conduct autonomous vehicle testing in China. Among them, like other competitors, BMW has already started testing its own autonomous vehicles in Europe in the past few years.

This time, BMW's planned self-driving car testing in China indicates the beginning of BMW's expanded research project on autonomous driving technology. The above-mentioned research project on autopilot technology carried out by BMW Motors in China also lays the foundation for the development of fully autonomous driving or highly automated driving technology. The testing of autonomous vehicles in Europe needs to take into consideration the traffic characteristics of the European region. The European region contains a large number of tunnels, borders, and toll stations, and China’s traffic conditions have their own unique characteristics. With the rapid expansion of road traffic in China's urban areas, there have emerged a number of different levels of high-speed roads (including provincial highways, national highways, and high-speed highways), which have also set new requirements for design engineers of autonomous vehicles.

BMW said that the above auto-driving car test project will last two years, and it will also design a large number of prototype prototypes. BMW's self-driving cars mainly rely on digital maps, GPS positioning systems, radar systems, and camera sensing systems to achieve vehicle control. At the same time, the current test of self-driving cars is mainly done on the highway. The most important partner in BMW's self-driving car test project is the German Continental Company.
As with most car manufacturers, BMW believes that self-driving cars can effectively reduce the number of traffic accidents, and in particular, reduce the number of accidents caused by human factors. In addition to the above safety factors, the design of self-driving cars also takes into account the comfort and fuel efficiency of the vehicle.

It is worth noting that, for the moment, Mercedes-Benz is the only car manufacturer that has successfully launched a fully autonomous car. The Cadillac Motor Company made it clear that it will launch a semi-autonomously driven car with Cadillac’s proprietary intellectual property in its 2017 model year. Audi said it will launch a self-driving car by 2020. In the end, BMW Motor Co. had publicly announced that it would launch its semi-autonomous driving car before 2020.
