The automatic observation network of leaf area index for satellite applications is completed

[ Instrument network instrument research and development ] Recently, under the support of the National Civil Space Infrastructure Terrestrial Observation Satellite Common Application Support Platform Project, the National Engineering Laboratory of Remote Sensing Satellite Application of the Institute of Aerospace Information Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences completed the automatic observation network of leaf area index. The country-wide, long-term continuous ground observation of the leaf area index under the national typical ecological environment makes up for the lack of temporal and spatial resolution of traditional ground measurement methods.
Leaf area index (leaf area index) refers to the sum of the leaf area of ​​a plant on a unit surface area. In the field experiment, the leaf area index is an important indicator reflecting the growth status of the plant population. It controls the photosynthesis, respiration of vegetation, and land surface processes such as vegetation transpiration, carbon cycle, and rainfall interception. Its size is directly related to the final yield. Relevant; it is also an important input parameter for global ecological research, and has important applications in the ecological environment, climate change and other fields. Since the end of the last century, scientists have begun to use remote sensing technology to produce global and regional-scale leaf area index products. However, due to the lack of continuous large-scale and long-term ground observations, verification of the authenticity of leaf area index products has long been a problem that has plagued scientists for a long time. .
In response to this problem, the National Engineering Laboratory for Remote Sensing Satellite Application has carried out the construction of the leaf area index ground observation network system, and plans to deploy 15 sets of leaf area index wireless sensor network systems with completely independent intellectual property rights in China, including the fixed-point measurement system 14 sets and 1 set of mobile measurement systems, covering major ecosystem types such as farmland ecology, forest ecology, and grassland ecology, and will continue to improve the observation layout in the future. Since the end of 2018, the project has completed the installation of instruments at 15 sites, and the instruments at all sites are operating normally and have withstood the test of extreme cold in the north and high temperature and humidity in the south. As of July 2020, more than 12 million valid original data have been obtained.
