China's consumption of styrene-based resins such as polystyrene and acrylate-butadiene-styrene terpolymers is also lower than last year. A Chinese trader said: “Since the downstream resin market is sluggish, the current demand for styrene monomer is not strong.†As the price of oil dropped below US$77/barrel, the price of Styrene on August 9 was US$1,460/tonne (CFR China). In the past two weeks, prices have risen to around US$1,500/ton (EUR 1035/ton, CFR China). Although the demand for styrene monomer is still not enough, due to the shutdown of multiple sets of equipment in this area, supply is still in short supply.
A South Korean trader said: "At present, there are several sets of equipment in Asia that have been parked, and supply is tight, which has contributed to rising prices." In Taiwan, Formosa Plastics & Chemicals Corp. The 200,000-ton/year No. 1 and 300,000-ton/year No. 2 styrene production lines have been parked since mid-May. Taiwan's Styrene Monomer Corp (TSMC)'s 180,000-ton/year No. 1 production line at Linyuan still stopped due to mechanical failure at the end of July. In mainland China, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical Company stopped Shanghai's 500,000 tons/year installation in early August for overhaul. In Singapore, Seraya Chemical's 330,000 tonne/year styrene monomer unit was shut down in August.
In addition to large-scale parking, due to fluctuations in energy prices and uncertain economic prospects in the United States and the euro area, there have been very few US-Asian arbitrage products in the past week. Industry insiders said that U.S. cargo has kept the supply in the region at an appropriate level.
