Japan Develops New Technology for Efficient Synthesis of Ammonia

On the 22nd, the research team led by professor Hideo Hoshino of the Tokyo Institute of Technology reported on the new issue of the British journal Nature and Chemistry that they have developed a new technology for the efficient synthesis of ammonia and the energy consumed by using this technology. Only one-tenth of the traditional method.

Ammonia is very important for living organisms on earth. It is an important component of all foods and fertilizers. It also directly or indirectly participates in drug synthesis and is expected to find application in the field of fuel cells. Ammonia is currently one of the world's most productive inorganic compounds, producing approximately 170 million tons of ammonia annually.

Ammonia is synthesized from the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen, but destroying the strong binding between nitrogen molecules requires a large amount of energy to be consumed in reacting with hydrogen.

Hino Hideo and other researchers added to their development of superconducting material C12A7 now used in the synthesis of ammonia niobium particles, made of catalyst. C12A7 is a calcium aluminate compound that is the main component of high alumina cement.

The researchers found that under the action of this catalyst, nitrogen and hydrogen can efficiently synthesize ammonia. They believe that this is due to the fact that the relevant electrons become easily moved at the time of compounding, so that the nitrogen molecules easily become atoms.

Researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology are preparing to further improve the performance of the above catalysts and strive to bring the new technology to a practical level after 5 to 10 years.
