Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries develops a new regional jet

Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. is preparing to set up a new company to develop, manufacture and sell 70- to 90-level Mitsubishi Regional Jets (MRJ) and select Pratt & Whitney to provide its gear-driven turbofan engine (GTF).

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ jet will not wait until March 31, 2008 to decide whether it will be officially launched. The regional jet (MRJ) is scheduled to enter the market in 2012 and intends to secure 1,000 orders from the 5,000 demand market in the next 20 years.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries became the first user to choose the Puhui gear-driven turbofan engine, which is different from other 70-90-seat regional airliners, including Bombardier’s E-Jet aircraft and China’s ARJ21 aircraft. Russia's "Super Jet" 100.

Todd Kallman, president of Pratt & Whitney's civilian engine, said that the GTF beat General Electric's CF34-10 modified and Luo Luo's RB282 modified engine, which reduced fuel consumption by 12% and noise by 50%. The new GTF engine will provide 17,000 lb (75.7 kN) of thrust for the 86 to 96-seat MRJ90 and 15,000 lb (66.8 kN) of thrust for the 70- to 80-seat MRJ70.

Rockwell Collins will provide the Pro Line 21 avionics system for this type of aircraft, while Saab and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will sign a memorandum of understanding to provide protection for MRJ aircraft sold in Europe and the United States.

If the project starts, MRJ will become the first domestic civil aircraft since the development of YS-11 by Japan Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and YS-11 was discontinued in 1974, producing a total of 182 aircraft. In the 1980s, a research group established by some Japanese companies studied the 150-class YXX passenger aircraft. In the 1990s, it changed to a smaller YSX passenger aircraft. It was initially set to 80 seats and later changed to 110 seats. Since 1998, YSX research and development funds have been reduced, but research and development is still continuing. In 2005, based on market research on regional airliners, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries refocused its research and development focus on 70- to 90-seat passenger aircraft.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said that the MRJ aircraft will supply the two major airlines in Japan, namely All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines. The export markets are mainly Europe and the United States. In terms of market development, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said it will negotiate with potential partners to establish a viable solution. For the newly established MRJ company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said that the US manufacturer is the preferred partner and is currently negotiating with Boeing, but declined to give details.

Oxygen Plant is one kind of oxygen generation system producing oxygen. There are several types, one is small Oxygen Concentrator, producing small flow rate oxygen up to 20 liter per minute, it is mainly used at home. Another type is bigger flow rate oxygen plant, also using pressure swing adsorption technology. With this technology, oxygen with flow rate up to 200 Nm3/hr is suitable.  For oxygen production flow rate from 200 to 3000 Nm3/hr, more suitable solution is using vacuum pressure swing adsorption technology. Its operation cost is more lower than PSA for this big flow rate oxygen production.  For oxyen production bigger than 3000 Nm3/hr, normally use cryogenic technology. With this technology, oxygen production capacity can be 100000 Nm3/hr.
