EU optimizes ship design

In order to maintain the competitiveness of European shipbuilding, the EU-funded ship optimization design (IMPROVE) project is studying the design of the next generation of LNG, chemical and passenger ferries.

The Ship Optimization Design Project will develop a small series of highly customized production environment concepts in which important factors such as structure, manufacturing, operation, performance and safety will be considered during the pre-production phase of shipbuilding. The objectives of ship optimization design include: reducing manufacturing costs by 8% to 15%, shortening the construction period by 10% to 15%, and reducing ship maintenance costs by 5% to 10% for shipowners.

The ship optimization design project is the sixth framework project funded by the European Union. There are 3 shipowners, 4 universities, 3 shipyards, 2 ship design companies, 2 engineering companies, 2 software companies, and 1 involved in the project. a classification society and an international university federation. The Ship Optimization Design Team hopes that the research results of these projects will help the European shipbuilding industry recapture the market share of South Korea and China, which have lost their cheap labor to competitors.
