Based on the world’s largest galaxy survey eBOSS project, Zhao Gongbo’s team developed a new theory and data analysis method, using the cross-correlation of the two types of galaxy samples, which has never been explored before 700 million to 1.8 billion light-years ago. In the space-time range of the universe, successfully measured the expansion of the universe's background and the growth rate of its structure. Zhao Gongbo explained that this work has confirmed the existence of dark energy at the level of 11 standard deviations, which is evidence of dark energy observations obtained so far by relying on galaxy surveys. The study found that eBOSS observation data supports the previously discovered dark energy dynamics.
The difficulty of galaxy survey cosmology lies in data processing, especially the analysis of observational statistical errors and systematic errors. eBOSS is an international multi-target survey conducted in a wide range of time and space, creating conditions for conducting cross-correlation analysis. Wang Yuting said that cross-correlation can not only reduce statistical errors, but more importantly, it can effectively control system errors and obtain more accurate and reliable results.
Dark energy is the main component of the current universe, revealing its essence has great scientific significance. The eBOSS International Cooperation Group is composed of more than 30 international astronomy research units including the National Astronomical Observatory. Since its operation in 2014, the eBOSS project has lasted 6 years, obtained nearly 1 million galaxy spectra between redshifts of 0.6 and 2.2, achieved a series of important scientific results, and successfully completed the scientific mission.
