Federal-Mogul develops a new lightweight aluminum piston

The Federal-Mogul Group has announced that it has developed a lightweight, high-strength aluminum piston that helps increase the energy density and efficiency of direct-injection gasoline engines.

The advanced Elastoval II pistons developed by Federal-Mogul are not only of lighter weight, but also contribute to higher output power and can withstand higher pressures later in the engine's high-charge combustion cycle.

The Elastoval II piston is approximately 20% lighter than conventional pistons. Prior to this, the thickness of the piston wall produced by Federal-Mogul was 4 mm, and the newly developed Elastoval II piston wall thickness was only 2.5 mm.

Arnd Baberg, chief engineer at Federal-Mogul Power Products, said that reducing the thickness of the piston wall means redesigning the entire structure of the piston.

Some automakers are verifying the Federal-Mogul Elastoval II Pistons, which plans to mass-produce the new pistons by the end of this year.
